    • Donald Trump wanted to bomb Russian & Iranian targets amid Syria strikes
      Posted 04/16/2018 01:20 PM
    • President Donald Trump reportedly favored bombing Russian and Iranian targets in Syria, before Pentagon chief James Mattis talked the US leader out of it.

Trump discussed three military options for Syria last week with his revamped national security team, led by Bush-era hawk John Bolton, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing sources familiar with White House decision-making.

The least expansive option included striking "a narrow set of targets" linked to what the report said were "Syria's chemical weapons capabilities." The second option proposed targeting a broader set of Syrian targets, including "suspected chemical-weapons research facilities and military command centers."

    • Trump is erasing racial diversity from the South's federal courts
      Posted 04/15/2018 06:56 PM
    • MAGA

This week the White House announced 19 new judicial nominees, and - like President Trump's previous nominees - the overwhelming majority are white. Of the over 100 attorneys he's nominated to federal judgeships to date, around 92 percent are white, with only a handful of African Americans and Latinos. Trump's record on judicial diversity is the worst since President Reagan.

Trump's regression on judicial diversity could take decades to reverse. He is nominating judges at a much faster pace than President Obama, and - despite the glaring lack of diversity - the Senate is rapidly confirming them to seats it refused to fill in 2016 and 2017. Trump's nominees are also relatively young, which means these white judges will preside over an increasingly diverse population for decades to come.

    • Comey: I don't know whether to believe Trump's denials about Russian prostitutes
      Posted 04/13/2018 10:42 AM
    • Former FBI Director James Comey said he is not sure whether he believes President Donald Trump's denials about unsubstantiated dealings with prostitutes in Russia five years ago.

In an ABC News interview, Comey described briefing the then-president-elect on the salacious, unverified allegations that he watched prostitutes urinate on each other in Russia in 2013. The allegations came from what's known as the Steele dossier, which was funded in part by the Democratic National Committee.

"It was almost an out-of-body experience for me," Comey told ABC in an excerpt that aired Friday. "I was floating above myself, looking down, saying, 'You're sitting here briefing the incoming president about prostitutes in Moscow.'"

    • The F.B.I. on Monday raided the office of President Trump's longtime personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, seizing records related to several topics including payments to a pornographic-film actress.

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan obtained the search warrant after receiving a referral from the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, according to Mr. Cohen's lawyer, who called the search "completely inappropriate and unnecessary." The search does not appear to be directly related to Mr. Mueller's investigation, but likely resulted from information he had uncovered and gave to prosecutors in New York.

"Today the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York executed a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications between my client, Michael Cohen, and his clients," said Stephen Ryan, his lawyer. "I have been advised by federal prosecutors that the New York action is, in part, a referral by the Office of Special Counsel, Robert Mueller."

    • A 79-year-old Holocaust survivor says in a new interview that the U.S. under President Trump feels like Germany did just before the Nazis took over.

Stephen Jacobs told Newsweek that the rise of the far-right under Trump "feels like 1929 or 1930 Berlin."

"Things just go from bad to worse every day," he said. "There's a real problem growing."

The Chinese scientist, Weiqiang Zhang, 51, was a legal permanent resident living in Manhattan, Kansas. He was working as a rice breeder at Ventria Bioscience, a biopharmaceutical company that creates genetically modified rice. He stole hundreds of rice seeds from the company that had cost millions of dollars and taken years of research to develop, according to the Justice Department. He kept the seeds in his home.

    • Madeleine Albright: Will We Stop Trump Before It's Too Late?
      Posted 04/06/2018 02:53 PM
    • On April 28, 1945 - 73 years ago - Italians hung the corpse of their former dictator Benito Mussolini upside down next to a gas station in Milan. Two days later, Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his bunker beneath the streets of war-ravaged Berlin. Fascism, it appeared, was dead.

To guard against a recurrence, the survivors of war and the Holocaust joined forces to create the United Nations, forge global financial institutions and - through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - strengthen the rule of law. In 1989, the Berlin Wall came down and the honor roll of elected governments swelled not only in Central Europe, but also Latin America, Africa and Asia. Almost everywhere, it seemed, dictators were out and democrats were in. Freedom was ascendant.

Today, we are in a new era, testing whether the democratic banner can remain aloft amid terrorism, sectarian conflicts, vulnerable borders, rogue social media and the cynical schemes of ambitious men. The answer is not self-evident. We may be encouraged that most people in most countries still want to live freely and in peace, but there is no ignoring the storm clouds that have gathered. In fact, fascism - and the tendencies that lead toward fascism - pose a more serious threat now than at any time since the end of World War II.

    • Iowa's Hog Farmers Are Facing Losses Thanks to Trump's Trade War
      Posted 04/03/2018 02:22 PM
    • The U.S.-China trade war President Donald Trump unleashed may punish the Midwest heartland that helped put him in office.

Hog producers in Iowa have seen their returns plunge in the last month and losses are expected for the full year as China's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. pork take effect. On average, the farmers will probably see a loss of $4.34 per hog, based on futures prices as of April 2, according to Lee Schulz, an assistant professor who specializes in agricultural economics at Iowa State University.

American pork supplies were already on the rise, and the Chinese tariffs have exacerbated concerns over a glut. The market impact has been swift. June hog futures reached a record low for the contract on Tuesday. Schulz's outlook for farmer losses compares with a Feb. 9 projection for average profit of $8.49 a head in 2018.

    • Republican strategist Alex Castellanos on Sunday warned President Trump to "get good legal help now."

Castellanos said during a panel on ABC's "This Week" that it is hard to believe that special counsel Robert Mueller "is not going to dig up something in Trump's complicated financial history to say look, the president of the United States did this and it was wrong."

"And it's hard to believe then that when Republicans lose the House in 2018, maybe by 40 or 50 seats, that House is not going to impeach him," he predicted.

    • New York Post Botches Concealed Carry Hit Piece On Donald Trump Jr.
      Posted 03/29/2018 10:20 AM
    • Facts be damned, control the narrative.

Page Six, the New York Post's gossip column, botched a concealed carry hit piece on Donald Trump, Jr., on Monday, alleging that he has avoided applying for a New York concealed carry permit because it might require the disclosure of his tax returns. There's just one problem: he's had a valid gun permit in New York for over a decade. And we know that because the news pages of the New York Post first reported it in 2007.

Emily Smith, the paper's gossip columnist, alleged that Trump had recently "celebrated" his divorce by getting a new concealed carry permit in Pennsylvania. The Page Six author then further suggested that Trump sought a permit in Pennsylvania rather than New York because the latter may require tax returns to be furnished prior to receiving a gun permit.

    • Donald Trump Says Military Might Pay for Border Wall Since It's Now 'Rich'
      Posted 03/25/2018 11:19 PM
    • President Donald Trump on Sunday defended his decision to sign a $1.3 trillion federal spending bill despite his misgivings, pointing to billions in new funding for the military and national security.

Trump said on Twitter from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida that because of the military funding, "many jobs are created and our Military is again rich." He said building his signature border wall "is all about National Defense" and suggested the military could pay for it.

Since grudgingly signing the bill on Friday after threatening a veto, Trump has faced fierce criticism from conservatives who have accused him of caving to congressional Democrats. The president said Friday at the White House he was "very disappointed" in the package, in part because it didn't fully pay for his border wall. But Trump said he had "no choice" because the nation needed to fund the military.

While exact turnout figures have yet to be released, organizers obtained a permit for 500,000 people to rally in D.C. around Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House. Hundreds of similar marches were planned worldwide.

The Daily Beast reports that U.S. investigators identified the hacker as a Moscow-based Russian intelligence operative after the hacker failed to activate a virtual private networking (VPN) service meant to obscure the operative's location before logging on.

The result was the operative's Moscow IP address being caught in the logs of a U.S. social media company, allowing U.S. investigators to track the individual.

    • Donald Trump set for China tariff announcement on Thursday
      Posted 03/21/2018 06:42 PM
    • President Donald Trump will announce tariffs on Chinese imports on Thursday, a White House official said, in a move aimed at curbing theft of U.S. technology that is likely to trigger retaliation from Beijing and stoke fears of a global trade war.

There was no indication of the size and the scope of tariffs, which U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said on Wednesday would target China's high technology sector and which could also include restrictions on Chinese investments in the United States. Other sectors like apparel could also be hit.

"Tomorrow the president will announce the actions he has decided to take based on USTR's 301 investigation into China's state-led, market-distorting efforts to force, pressure, and steal U.S. technologies and intellectual property," the official said.

    • The Trump National Golf Club in Westchester County, New York, is once again seeking permission to bring in foreign workers to serve as waiters, waitresses and cooks, according to petitions posted online by the Department of Labor Wednesday.

The workers are being sought under the federal H-2 visa program, which permits American employers to hire foreign laborers under temporary work visas as long as no qualified US workers want the jobs.

The fancy private club is located just 35 miles from New York City and its vast labor market. The petition to the Labor department effectively attests that there are no qualified American workers who want the jobs. The cooking jobs pay $14.36 an hour. The serving jobs pay $15.20 an hour. Both jobs are eligible for overtime.

    • Karen McDougal is the woman with the best chance of bringing down Donald Trump
      Posted 03/21/2018 03:34 PM
    • There has been extensive media coverage of Stormy Daniels, the adult film star who says she had an affair with Donald Trump in 2006. Daniels' new attorney, Michael Avenatti, has been a fixture on TV. Daniels herself is scheduled to be interviewed on 60 Minutes on March 25.

But another woman, former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal, whose story has attracted significantly less attention, may end up being a bigger problem for Trump. (McDougal will appear on TV this Thursday on CNN with Anderson Cooper.)

In some respects, McDougal's story is similar to Daniels'. Like Daniels, she met Trump at a 2006 golf tournament in Lake Tahoe. Trump later wined and dined both women at the Beverly Hills Hotel. He promised them both apartments. And then, as election day approached, both women were paid to keep quiet. They were both represented by the same lawyer, Keith Davidson.
