      • Assume I'm a non prepper, who lives in a secondary target area, with my own property.

Can I set up a reasonable shelter in my basement, since I'm likely far away from the primary blast, and only have to worry about fallout and radiation?

I have enough clean water for a few weeks if necessary - not only bottled, but, in my water heater, and elsewhere. I can even tap into the city supply if necessary.

What else should I do if I hear the sirens?

I am sufficiently close to an airport that will probably be hit by something in the 2.3 megaton range, but, in the class 3 area, so as long as I don't expose my skin, I will be fine.

Thats why my basement is a good idea - and it has a separate exit, so even if the house collapses on top, i can still get out.

      • How close to the airport? A 2-3Mt weapon has quite the radius. Check nukemap.

Serious answer, dont look at the light from the blast, it is gamma rays and will blind you instantly.
Last thin you want it to be blinded and stumbling around in radioactive rubble.

My plan is to be underground, sipping a fine vintage, and maybe listening to AM radio while it lasts, after which I can switch to the government frequency.

      • They wouldnt warn us as they try to catch it, because we are too stupid to not destroy ourselves in a frenzy in the last 30 mins. Then it gets intercepted, maybe?

I doubt there will be any warning at all.

it takes about an hour for missiles from Russia or China to make it here.

So, give a half hour for detection, ten minutes for deciding, and I am never more than 10 minutes from home.

      • If the blast doesn't kill you, the radiation fallout will slowly kill you.
Better to be in the blast zone.

I'm a survivor. I'd sooner try to figure out how to fix radiation, than die suddenly and horiffically.

Besides, I know the best places for looting.

There are no rats on my property.

Maybe some squirrels, but, I have no idea what wine to pair with them.

I know there is a skunk nearby, but, I don't know how to trap it.

IF NOT, YOUR GONNA DIE PAINFULLY, POSSIBLY SLOWLY...

is it possible to die painlessly? Pretty much every way to die seems horrible, except maybe asphyxiation.

Most will die painlessly. If you are within two miles of the detonation, you will be instantly evaporated. At best you will be rendered into dust particles.

You will probably still experience a moment of intense pain as your entire body signals your brain shit is wrong.

      • Preppers are going to be REALLY disappointed. Multiple detonations will cause shock waves that will cause cracks in even the best build shelters. This will allow radiation to invade your ventilation system and cause you to die a slow painful death. Even if you survive, your food and water supply will become contaminated.
